#CuseCamp15: First Day of Pads

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Five days into preseason camp, the Syracuse football team held its first practice in full pads on Thursday afternoon.

Under the direction of head coach Scott Shafer, the Orange slotted time for every position to get some reps in a mostly live setting as ball carriers were not brought to the ground.

"We just started camp, it's only the fifth day," defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough said. "Right now, they are all competing."

In one-on-one's with wide receivers and defensive backs, sophomore wide receiver Steve Ishmael made a couple of impressive catches going over the top. Ishmael is the squad's leading returning receiver with 27 catches for 415 yards and team-high three touchdowns in 2014.

On the other side of the ball, senior cornerback Julian Whigham came down with an acrobatic interception during the team period. Through the first five days, Ishmael and Whigham have constantly pushed each other to get better.

"We always try to go good on good out there," Bullough said. "When they do drills, we want good on good."

As the Orange went to work in seven-on-sevens, tight end Cameron MacPherson, who was recently awarded a scholarship, made consecutive catches to help move the offense.

The team will start two-a-days tomorrow with the first practice scheduled for 9 a.m. and the second at 4 p.m.
