'Cuse Football Focused on 'Right Here, Right Now'

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse football team is ready to focus on the 2015 season. The Orange reported for preseason camp Saturday and hits the practice field tomorrow to start preparations for the season opener against Rhode Island on Friday, Sept. 4.

Head coach Scott Shafer, quarterback Terrel Hunt and linebacker Zaire Franklin addressed the media Saturday in Manley Field House. The trio said the team has put the 2014 season in the past and is committed to improving each day as the season draws closer.

"We are excited about what is going on right here and right now," said Shafer. "We've spent the last seven and a half to eight months focused in on getting to this point and it's just great to be kicking off the 2015 season."

Both Hunt and Franklin are also ready to put 2014 in the rearview mirror and are looking forward to getting out on the practice field with their teammates.

When asked about last year's 3-9 campaign, Franklin simply said "last year is over and I am ready to move on."

As part of today's orientation, the Orange will attend meetings and hear presentations from various support staff units. Tonight the SU seniors will take part in the ritual "Burning of the Shoe," a tradition started by former head coach Dick MacPherson and revived by Doug Marrone.

Syracuse will hold practice sessions on campus from Aug. 9 to Aug. 17 then travel north to Fort Drum for the fourth year in a row. The Orange will spend four days at Fort Drum, home of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, and participate in various military interactions in addition to regular practices and meetings.

"The chance to be trained by the world's greatest military is something that really fires me up," said Shafer.

The Orange returns home on Friday, Aug. 21 for another week of camp before turning its attention toward the opener against Rhode Island.
